Don't wait until you're laid off (+ 14 remote roles)

Hi Reader!

I see this all the time with senior marketing clients.

They're in a great role, hitting their targets, and feeling solid. Maybe they just got promoted or crushed their last review.

"I'm safe here," they think.

Then the market turns, a reorg hits, another round of layoffs.

Just like that, the "safe" job is gone.

Job security inside a corporate structure is mostly an illusion.

It doesn't matter how hard you work or how impressive your title looks on an org chart. When company priorities shift, you don't control the outcome.

Career leverage is different.

Leverage is what you build for yourself while you're still employed, so you never have to navigate the market from a place of panic.

Here are 3 ways to build leverage while you're still in your job:

Document your wins before you lose access

The most common objection I hear from senior marketers is: "I don't have access to my past numbers."

Don't wait until you're locked out of your tools to remember what you built. Track your pipeline impact, conversion baselines, and revenue growth while you're running the programs.

Keep a portfolio of the hard evidence that proves what you're capable of.

Build a professional brand outside your company

Your reputation inside your current company only protects you as long as you're there.

Share your thinking on LinkedIn, break down how you solve problems, how you evaluate trade-offs, and what you're learning along the way.

When the market already knows how you think, opportunities come looking for you instead of you hunting for them.

Cultivate relationships when you need nothing from anyone

Reaching out to people only when you need a job is uncomfortable, and people can feel the urgency.

The best time to connect with peers, founders, and leaders is when you're completely happy and settled. Have casual conversations, share insights, and stay visible.

That way, if your role disappears tomorrow, you're stepping into an active network rather than starting from zero.

When you control your proof, your reputation, and your relationships, you stop relying on corporate loyalty to keep you safe. You become the safety net.

Hey Reader! Last week, I shared my experience hiring a Social Media Specialist at Arc. The part that got the most questions? The video. I mentioned that the top 12 applicants all sent short, customized Looms, and the responses were split. Some people loved it. Others thought it was “too much.” Hate to break it to you, but this market is rough. Recruiters aren’t scrolling leisurely through 100+ resumes. If you want to stand out, you have to go the extra mile. This week, I’m breaking down what...

Hey Reader! I had a call this week with a creative director who’s been in the game for over 10 years. Super sharp. Insanely talented. But when I told her the #1 thing missing was presence, she paused. “That’s not me,” she said. But here’s the thing, once you’ve got the experience, what moves your career forward isn’t just what you’ve done. It’s who knows about it. Presence = perception. And perception shapes opportunity. Especially if you’re job searching. So this edition is for anyone...
