☕️ 4 steps to your first coffee chat + 11 remote jobs hiring now

Hey Reader!

Welcome to The Remote Marketer newsletter! 🎉

I’m excited to share this project with you, designed to help you grow your career and land a remote job by marketing yourself the right way.

If you’ve found my LinkedIn advice helpful, you’ll love the exclusive resources, job leads, and supportive community here.

Let’s jump in.

Just sending job applications isn’t enough.

Without networking, you’re missing real opportunities. But how do you start, and what do you say?

This month, I’ll help you network naturally by starting with step one: sending your first message and landing a coffee chat.

How to ask for a coffee chat

Referrals can open doors, but most people go about them the wrong way. They send a cold DM saying, “Can you refer me?” and hope for the best.

But here’s the truth: people don’t refer strangers.

They refer those they know, like, and trust.

Instead of making a cold ask, focus on building a real relationship first.

Here’s how to do it step by step:

1️⃣ Send a thoughtful first message

Reach out within 48 hours to start a conversation, not ask for a job. Keep it casual and find common ground to make it feel natural.

Example:

"Thanks for connecting! I saw you’ve been doing marketing at [Company] for two years. What’s your favorite part about working there?"

2️⃣ Engage with their content

In week 1 or 2, build familiarity by liking and commenting on their posts with thoughtful insights.

Example:

"That’s an interesting take on [topic]. I’ve seen something similar in my experience with [specific example]. Have you noticed the same?"

3️⃣ Share something useful

In weeks 2 or 3, strengthen the connection by DMing a relevant article, podcast, or resource.

Example:

"I saw this article on [topic], and it reminded me of your post about [specific point]. I found the section on [detail] interesting. Thought you might enjoy it!"

4️⃣ Ask for a coffee chat

In weeks 3 or 4, ask for a 15–30 minute coffee chat and keep the conversation focused and specific before mentioning referrals.

Example:

"I’ve really enjoyed our conversations about [topic]. Would you be open to a 15-minute coffee chat? I’d love to hear more about your experience at [company], especially [aspect of their work]."

What to work on this month

✔ Connect with five new people and send a personalized message.
✔ Comment on at least two of their posts per week.
✔ Share two valuable resources (an article, podcast, or insight).
✔ Book at least one coffee chat with a new connection.

To celebrate, I’m giving away a free 60-minute career power session. Comment "I'm in" + your favorite insight from this issue on this post, and I’ll pick a winner in 24 hours. I’ll DM the winner on LinkedIn this weekend.

Hey Reader! If you’ve been here a while, you know my home base is Taiwan. But right now? I'm writing to you from Mexico. This summer, I came to support family through a tough season. And I’ll be honest, moving back into your parents’ home after 10 years of living independently is NOT easy. It’s been a lesson in patience, presence, and relearning how to live with others. I’m cherishing it all, even the hard parts. The bright side? I finally built my remote work setup here in Mexico. And with...

Hey Reader! The past couple of weeks have been a whirlwind. I flew to Seoul, and now I'm in Mexico for the summer. Right when I landed, I got hit with the flu. My body was clearly waving a white flag after all the travel. But I knew I had to be here. It's a tough season health-wise for my family. I can’t fix it. But I can show up. And that’s the gift of remote work. I didn’t need to ask permission to go where I’m needed most. I just packed my laptop and booked a ticket. In the midst of all...

Hey Reader! Last week, I did something wild: I took a break from LinkedIn. No posts. No scroll. Just quiet focus. And guess what? That pause did wonders for The Remote Marketer. It also reminded me why LinkedIn has been such a big part of my career. It's where I built my brand and got real opportunities: In the past year, 3 CEOs reached out to me directly about roles. No job boards. No applications. (and one of those chats just turned into my next fractional role.) The truth? LinkedIn works...
